About Roman Gardens

The Roman Garden, thus called is a somewhat misleading name. It was certainly not here in Roman times, but is a left-over from Chester's contribution to the wonderful Festival of Britain which took place in London, in 1951. As such, for a time it was a triumph, for the untrained eye found it difficult to discern as an impostor.

Now many of the collective artefacts that made the gardens so realistic have vanished. Roman columns still stand as an attraction, but these have been altered and added to in a re-modelling effort of the year 2000. You will also find a reconstruction of a Roman hypocaust, an underfloor heating system recovered from the legionary baths in Bridge Street.

The gardens offer visitors a quiet oasis of tranquillity. They are an interesting stop and a pleasant place to rest tired eyes and weary feet following a forage into the essential heart of Roman Chester and its ancient city walls. The gardens also now give access to the River Dee, and interpretive panels tell the history of the garden and of the city in Roman times.

There are however, conflicting opinions, some say the gardens have been here since the site was used as a Roman garrison in 60 AD, and that it formed part of a settlement called Deva. The former version seems far more realistic, but perhaps its best to visit and make your mind up for yourself.
